Position Announcement: Assistant Professor in Scenic Design

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in scenic design, professional experience as a scenic designer, and experience teaching scenic design at the college level in a diverse college environment. Professional memberships optional. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. A strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom is essential.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of scenic design and design-related courses from the beginning to the advanced level. The candidate should have the ability to teach both traditional design practices and innovative design skills in the context of current and future scenic design trends and technologies. Applications should include evidence of expertise in various aspects of scenic and properties design and construction and scene painting. Knowledge and ability in projection design and technology is desired. Expertise areas welcomed.

Primary responsibilities include teaching, creative or scholarly productivity, designing for the season with course load reassignment; recruiting, advising/mentoring, supervision of student assistants in properties and painting, committees, innovation, leadership, and other service.

 

SFA has a full-time technical director and a renovated scene shop with separate paint and properties construction areas. Teaching load will include basic stagecraft each semester and scenic design alternating with advanced courses in related areas of theatre and design and technology.

 

This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position responsible for contributing significantly to Stephen F. Austin State University’s undergraduate and/or graduate programs through teaching, scholarship/creative accomplishment, and service. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This is a security-sensitive position. Reports to the chair.
